World Health Organizations (WHO) stated that climate change poses a serious risk to mental health and wellbeing. Hence countries must prioritize their efforts to tackle the issue along with the climate crisis. According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC), rapid climate change poses a threat to maintenance as well as psychosocial well-being ranging from emotional distress, anxiety, depression, grief, suicidal behavior, etc.

Dr. Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Environment Climate Change and Health, stated that the impacts of climate change are disturbing our daily lives, and the support available for people and communities dealing with climate change-related hazards and long-term risks, especially for mental health is sparse.

2021 WHO survey of 95 countries showed that only 9 countries have included mental health and psychosocial support in their National health and climate change plans. Hence the WHO released a policy brief at a Stockholm + 50 Conference in Sweden recommending five important approaches for Governments to address the impact of climate change and mental health. These five recommendations are integrating climate change considerations with mental health programs, integrating mental health support with climate action, building a global commitment, framing a community-based approach to reduce vulnerabilities, and taking measures to reduce the funding gaps that exist between mental health and psychosocial support.
